The main purpose of the training package is to develop the minimum skills and knowledge required by personnel involved in wheelchair service delivery. An important aim of the training package is to get it integrated into the regular paramedical/rehabilitation training programs such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, prosthetics and orthotics, rehabilitation nursing.

The training package includes:

  • Core knowledge required for wheelchair service delivery;
  • An overview of the key steps of wheelchair service delivery described in the WHO guidelines on the provision of manual wheelchairs in less resourced settings;
  • Working with wheelchair users to assess their mobility needs and identify the best possible mobility solution;
  • Providing an appropriate wheelchair with an appropriate cushion;
  • Problem solving to find simple modifications to the wheelchair that can help ensure the best for the user;
  • Wheelchairs repairs & maintenance;
  • Training of wheelchair users to make the best use of their wheelchair; and
  • Fabrication of a foam contoured cushion.

 

Intermediate_Training

Following the release of the Wheelchair Service Training Package – Basic level (WSTP-B), WHO in partnership with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has developed the Wheelchair Service Training Package – Intermediate Level (WSTP-I). WSTP-I is the second part of the WHO wheelchair service training package series and focusses more on addressing the needs of people who have severe difficulties in walking and moving around and also having poor postural control . While developing this training package, special attention was given on the provision of appropriate wheelchairs for children who have poor postural control and are unable to sit upright independently.

Purpose of the training

The need for wheelchair personnel is universal. WSTP-I is designed to support the training of personnel or volunteers to provide an appropriate manual wheelchair and cushion for children and adults who need additional postural support to sit upright. The main purpose of this training package is to:

  • increase the number of wheelchair users who receive a wheelchair which meets their needs;
  • increase the number of personnel trained in intermediate level wheelchair service delivery;
  • improve the competencies of wheelchair service delivery personnel;
  • increase the quality of wheelchair service delivery for people who need a comparatively higher level of intervention than basic level;
  • include this training package in regular paramedical/rehabilitation training programmes;
  • achieve greater integration of wheelchair service delivery within rehabilitation services.
Managers_Training

The purpose of this training package is to create awareness and develop the skills and knowledge of all personnel involved in wheelchair service delivery. WHO realizes that trained personnel alone cannot ensure appropriate wheelchair provision in the country or carry out their responsibilities as outlined in the Wheelchair Guidelines, unless and until there is a higher level involvement to establish or improve wheelchair provision within the country. This Wheelchair Service Training Package for Managers (WSTPm) provides an overview of the rehabilitation/wheelchair service manager’s role in engaging people and leading the implementation of the eight steps of wheelchair service delivery and issues related to it. This will include the human and physical resources required to provide a wheelchair service; including planning, organizing, staffing, directing, costing/funding, and monitoring and evaluation.

Delivery of this training package will help the managers to:

  • better plan wheelchair provision;
  • increase the quality of wheelchair service delivery;
  • improve staff retention;
  • increase the number of users who receive a wheelchair that meets their needs; and
  • increase the sustainability of wheelchair provision.

WHO realizes that trained personnel alone cannot ensure appropriate wheelchair provision in the country or carry out their responsibilities as outlined in the Wheelchair Guidelines, unless and until there is a higher level of involvement to establish or improve wheelchair provision within the country. The purpose of the training package is to create awareness and develop the skills and knowledge of all personnel required to be involved (stakeholders) in establishing appropriate wheelchair provision in their country/region.

This package provides an overview of the stakeholder’s role, informing them about the need for and benefit of appropriate wheelchair provision and getting their support to develop an appropriate wheelchair provision programme.

Delivery of this training package will help stakeholders to:

  • improve their understanding about the need for and benefit of an appropriate wheelchair;
  • be better informed about their role in developing appropriate wheelchair provision;
  • increase the quality of wheelchair service delivery;
  • attain better understanding of barrier-free environments;
  • gain more commitment to seek/provide appropriate budgetary support; and
  • increase the sustainability of the wheelchair provision.

The goals of the Wheelchair Skills Program (WSP) are to increase the likelihood that a wheelchair user or caregiver who needs and wants to improve his/her ability to safely and effectively use a wheelchair will have an opportunity to do so, to provide an evidence-based means for wheelchair skills training to occur and to provide learning resources to those who wish to use them. This program was developed by Dr. Lee Kirby. Dr. Kirby has been involved in wheelchair research program for over 30 years at Dalhousie University and the Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre. In that time, he and his collaborators developed, evaluated and refined the Wheelchair Skills Program, publishing more than 145 peer-reviewed papers and delivering many presentations around the world.

Wheelchair skills are not ends in themselves, they are means to an end. In terms of the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Function (2001), wheelchair skills are “activities”. The ability to perform them represents “capacity” and their use in everyday life represents “performance”. The purpose of these activities is to overcome barriers in the environment and to thereby permit the wheelchair user to fulfill his/her desired role in society (“participation”).

Other potential benefits of wheelchair-skills training for wheelchair users and caregivers include fewer acute and overuse injuries, improved sense of wellbeing (through self-esteem, self-efficacy, confidence and personal control), improved development (of children) and having fun.

In addition to or instead of learning wheelchair skills, there may be alternative ways to accomplish the learner’s goals (e.g. by changing wheelchairs, by accepting the assistance of a caregiver or by eliminating accessibility barriers). Alternatively, if the goal is not a feasible one, the most appropriate strategy may be to assist the learner in adjusting his/her expectations to a more realistic level.
